We need to talk about intimate partner violence

Did you know that LGBTIQA+ community doesn’t recognise intimate partner violence - and that’s a problem.

This week we started a conversation about a particular part of family violence/intimate partner violence - coercive control. When people think about what constitutes this type of violence, they might have an experience of it, but don’t have the words. So we started with definitions and then shared some further information about what that might look like in LGBTIQA+ relationships.

Below you’ll find further information about what coercive control might look like, how to recognise some of the ways it might be used against LGBTIQA+ people in their relationships and, importantly, what technology mediated coercive control looks like.

If any of this is resonating and you’d like some further advice on safety planning or addressing the dynamic at home with some supports, reach into the Orange Door. If you are in distress and need to speak to a police officer, call 000 or visit our local station and ask to speak to an LLO (noting that you should get really great support from all officers at the front desk if an LLO isn’t available).
